An auction by Southby's in NY on Thursday promises to change the way the global market views contemporary tribal art from the original Kipling country. Late Jangarh Singh Shyam's two painting fetched Rs.15 lakh and 3 lakh .Its the third time that a Gond artist from MP went under hammer at Southby's. In 1981, the painter J.Swaminathan came across 17 year old Shyam, with an exraordinary sense of form and style, decorating village huts. Hailing from a smalll village in Mandla district in MP Shyam is the poster boy of Gond art.
Though he was feted in his lifetime, Shyam's canvases are experiencing this sort of commercial succes only posthumously.
